Is first Alba polling a disaster?

So the first poll commissioned by DC Thomson is in with reports that only 3% would vote for Alba.

As expected they are already saying it's over for Alex Salmond and his new party.

But hold on, there is still much about this new poll we know nothing about.

For example how was the question asked?

Were there any leading questions?

For example, it could be that the poll didn't even list Alba and the 3% represents people who picked other and stated the other party was Alba.

One clue that everything may not be as it seems is the 17% polled who think the contributions of Alex Salmond are helping the independence movement.

Why would that 17% only translate into a 3% vote?

And of course, this poll was conducted just days after the Alba launch, the reality is a lot of people may not even have known who Alba was, that could explain the 17% translating to just 3%.

Also, the polling saying that 50% rate Alex Salmond as very unfavourable with the likes of Boris Johnson, Douglass Ross, Willie Rennie, Anas Sarwar...., in fact, every other political leader in the UK, doing better in this category is laughable.

Time will tell, but I strongly suspect some shenanigans have gone on with this poll.

It smells like a rush job, put out to strangle any support for Alba at birth!

  1. "One clue that everything may not be as it seems is the 17% polled who think the contributions of Alex Salmond are helping the independence movement."

    1. There will be people who think that, but will still vote SNP.
    2. There will be unionists who think that Alex Salmond's "helping" of the indy movement will actually destroy it, and they like that.

It's a proper poll. Don't hunt for conspiracy where there isn't one.

You are correct though that it is the first poll, and let's see what the next ones show.

    1. I was responding to all the reports of Alba's demise from various sources pointing out that they lacked the information to make those statements.

But your comments are valid, thank you.

The gun is definitely being jumped a bit. Leading questions could have damaged Alba in the poll. But we should acknowledge that there's as much chance that the poll was tilted in their favour - for example, by specifically prompting for them.

Seems perfectly plausible to me. He's had almost uniformly terrible media coverage for the last two years.

    1. Yes I agree the gun definitely being jumped a bit and this was a response to the gun being jumped by unionists and SNP loyalists.

See my next post for update.
